Breaking the 1/180 Manual threshold.

I found these posts on the Strobist blog here.

With the Pentax K10D you have to switch your flash to HS (high speed) mode and set the camera to M (manual mode) and you can punch in any combination of aperture and shutter speed (yes 1/4000) and it works like a charm. Go Pentax!

Withe the K10D Gene you have to set the camera in M(anual) mode and set the af360 or af540 flash to H(igh-speed). In manual mode you can punch in up to 1/4000 and it will sync just fine, but you're going to have to max out the flash power and keep it in close to see any effect. Hope this helps Gene and it should also be in the manual as well from what I remember.

Is this at all possible, has anyone tried or replicated this? Would this at all possible with the K20D?

It's called High Speed Sync.
Read your owners manual.

HSS mode also works in any other camera mode.
I consistently shoot HSS in sunny conditions with fill flash on Av mode, and it works reasonably good with fast shutter speeds and well balanced exposures...

The only caveat is that you need a flash that supports HSS mounted on the camera. The built-in flash will not allow this.

As this is a flash feature mainly, you can use it with any Pentax DSLR. Most makes have a system like that, aynway. Be aware, that the reach of these HSS flash bursts is very limited and it is best use as a fill light during day time.

Ash - what metering mode do you use - matrix? And in Av mode the camera doesn't let you go above 1/180 does it, even with HSS turned on? Or do you put it in slow sync? Thanks.
