It might be a good idea to use that very thing for 'big lens' occasions, then, just get a comfy bag for other occasions, and maybe a holster for when you aren't carrying much besides that big lens. That big lens is way outside what else you might be wanting to carry. But I bet that when you do, that lens will be on the camera almost all of the time.
I have a pretty substantial old metal zoom lens which isn't quite as big, but probably weighs nearly as much. It *can* fit in the big canvas bag, but more often it rides in a separate little bag which my partner carries. That lens and one or two others isn't a big deal all on its own, but keeps my regular bag manageable if I get talked into hiking up some trail with my arthritis.
(Personally, I can be very stubborn about my ability to carry a pair of larger cameras around, but I have my limits.
