Lightsphere Beauty Dish

Inspired by this thread, I thought would try my hand at making a beauty dish. The dish is three parts, the lightsphere, a plastic party bowl, and a black silicon wrist band. The bowl is a 16 inch round, 10 quart, fresh pack bowl. The plastic is really thin. It is the same plastic you see used for take out salads in grocery stores. The painted bowl weighs in at 7 oz. The total weigh for the lightsphere, bowl and silicon wrist band is 13 oz.

I bought a set of chrome domes off ebay awhile ago for the lightsphere and they came with a extra set of orange domes. I used one of these for the diffuser. I sprayed the inside of the dome with 3M mounting glue and used silver Mylar gift wrap to create the dispersion mirror. I sprayed the top of the dome with glue and after letting the glue dry, I simply painted the top. Hopefully the glue will keep the paint on the lid for awhile.

Painting the inside of the bowl is the same, spray the glue, let is dry and then paint. I did cut the hole in the bowl for the lightsphere to pass through first. I also cut the little tab on the side off.

Cool idea, and it looks like you did a really good job in fabrication. If you have time, it'd be great if you could follow up with some with/without example shots.

Hahaha nice teddy bears, would like it if you show real people instead. But nice way to save money, I need to make my own.

I bought one of these to use with it. You just have to be careful not to cut yourself on the plastic edge when putting them on or off. I've got a nice paper cut across my thumb in figuring this out.

16" 41cm Soft White Diffuser Sock for Beauty Dish NEW - eBay (item 200379379151 end time Jan-28-10 18:44:14 PST) US $8.95 free shipping

I'm looking at at these grids, but the price is a little more than I'm willing to spend. I'm mostly worried that the weight will be too much.

Time to make your own grid by cutting and gluing black straws!

I just did mine in a small scale:
