I have been schlepping camera equipment around for more than 40 years and until I took a digital photography class and the instructor mentioned it, I had never thought of putting a light in my bag. Now I keep a $14 Mini Maglite in with the rest of my equipment. I haven't tried it yet but who knows, maybe it would put out enough light to let the AF work in the dark.

Not a silly question, but a good one.
In field work, I use a big Dolphin waterproof torch. It helps indeed the AF in the dark.
The head lamp is a good idea but it has to be powerful enough to assist the AF.
