For Sale: SDM to Screwdrive Conversions
Listed: 01-11-2016, 07:27 PM

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
SDM to Screwdrive Conversions

Asking Price
30.00 USD

Item Location
Mint Hill, NC (United States)

Item Description
As a service to fellow Pentax Forum users and with special permission from Adam I am happy to announce that I am available to convert failed SDM lenses to Screwdrive. I am only charging $30 at this time for lenses that I know how to convert. This is merely to cover my time and effort involved in tracking and sending packages and the time required to perform the conversion. The actual conversion is not hard and I encourage those willing to do this for themselves to do so but for those who want a bit of help - I'm offering this service.

The service includes:
Test Lens prior to conversion to verify that screwdrive is functional.
Backup LENSEEP.LNS file as is.
Modify a copy of this file to have screwdrive configuration.
Load modified file into the lens and test on an SDM capable body.
Return lens postage paid by owner.

Optionally: Email backup and modified files to the owner.

I have successfully converted all of these lenses:
DA* 16-50
DA* 50-135
DA* 200
DA* 300

I am unable to convert the DA* 60-250. There are no known methods for this conversion since the method that works for the other lenses is unreliable on this lens.

An example converted 16-50:

Please NOTE Lenses shipped to me without insurance that are lost are not my responsibility. I strongly suggest using a method with tracking and insurance but that is entirely up to you. My return postage will be based on your explicit instructions and I will not be responsible for lost items. I encourage the use of tracking and insurance.

I STRONGLY recommend that you include a letter inside the package identifying your Pentax Forums ID, the email you wish to be billed at and a contact phone number as well as full address. Ideally the letter should contain your address and mine just in case the label is lost for any reason. Finally if you include your postage instructions (insurance amount, signature required) it will make it easier. You should include not only an email for contact but also the specific email for me to send a paypal invoice to for payment.

Shipping Destinations
United States (Others considered on request)

Shipping Charge
Paid by Lens Owner

Shipping Services
USPS, UPS

Accepted Payment Types

Return Policy & Additional Details
If I am unable to convert the lens I will not charge for the service. Lens owner is still responsible for return shipping.

Please send me a private message if interested in the service!

Did you mean C0 to 80 or did you really use FF? All the instructions I have found change C0 to 80 not FF.
OH yeah I think you are correct. Mind is foggy tonight

so it seems like it wouldn't be TOO difficult to help even if one didnt have the backup so long as they didn't modify any other portions of the LENSEEP data.
That's the issue ... an unwitting deletion of text with no way of knowing what was there beforehand.

I have converted my own DA*16-50, but I can understand how some would find the process daunting. Go on you for providing this service.

Thanks Sandy, it started with me sending my k100d across country for free as a loan to another member but that was slow and shipping was costly. This allows multiple lenses to be "in flight" and I think for those who don't have the interest in learning how or the tech savvy or access to the right gear it is a reasonable option.

In any case I'm not in this to make money, the fee barely covers my time after all is said and done.

Very nice. Thank you for offering such a great service. My 60-250 still works fine, but I'd like to know if/when you feel confident to tackle it because of expectations I have that I'll need help in the future.
That's the one lens I know I am unable to convert. I am not sure what the problem is but no one has reported ever converting one of those successfully - actually one user did, but privately that user retracted their success. I tried the normal method on my own 60-250 and found it didn't seem to make the SDM stop working in a reliable way. I had one focus using screw drive then it reverted to SDM. I gave up and reloaded the original file. I'm willing to try other edits if anyone has suggestions.

I've been very reluctant to even think of purchasing any SDM lenses because of the failures; so your service is very much appreciated, and may encourage me to take to leap!

I have been saying that an enterprising Pentaxian should be doing this for years. Good for you Uncle It is a much needed service.

Thanks for providing this great service!
I hope I'll never need to use it though (well, I currently have no SDM lenses)...

Thanks folks. It is fairly easy to do with the right gear and basic computer skills - this is mainly to help those without interest in acquiring such gear or fiddling with computers and editors etc. It is however hard to image my dad doing this without becoming totally frustrated so I figured there are plenty of people who just don't think the way that I do and wouldn't find this a challenge but a burden.

Please note I have updated the list of possible to do lenses to include the DA* 200 based on reports and I have updated the list to show that I cannot convert the DA* 60-250 at this time (until someone has a working process). I have tested this on a DA* 16-50 and 50-135 and I have a DA* 300 inbound that I am 99% sure I can convert based on prior use of this same K100D body for that purpose by another member. My DA* 200 is with my dad or I would have already checked it, but we have credible reports of success in various threads using the standard fix so I foresee no problems. As I have successful conversions I will update the list to reflect known good options.

Great News

That is good to hear Uncle. Mine should be on the way back to me from you and looking forward to using it in AF mode again. It is really handy that you can do this as not all camera bodies are able to support this activity. For those like myself, we are not confined to manual focus for all eternity.

Yours and another are both in the hands of the usps. I'm happy to help.

What is the difference between SDM and the Screw drive method of AF? It can't be much slower or less accurate can it?
I have a DA 300 and DA 200 lenes with SDM and the 300 is starting to get spotty with focus. I am in interested? Anybody?
