For Sale: SDM to Screwdrive Conversions
Listed: 01-11-2016, 07:27 PM

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
SDM to Screwdrive Conversions

Asking Price
40.00 USD

Item Location
Mint Hill, NC (United States)

Item Description
As a service to fellow Pentax Forum users and with special permission from Adam I am happy to announce that I am available to convert failed SDM lenses to Screwdrive. I am only charging $40 at this time for lenses that I know how to convert. This is merely to cover my time and effort involved in tracking and sending packages and the time required to perform the conversion. The actual conversion is not hard and I encourage those willing to do this for themselves to do so but for those who want a bit of help - I'm offering this service.

The service includes:
Test Lens prior to conversion to verify that screwdrive is functional.
Backup LENSEEP.LNS file as is.
Modify a copy of this file to have screwdrive configuration.
Load modified file into the lens and test on an SDM capable body.
Return lens postage paid by owner.

Optionally: Email backup and modified files to the owner.

I have successfully converted all of these lenses:
DA* 16-50
DA* 50-135
DA* 200
DA* 300

I am unable to convert the DA* 60-250. There are no known methods for this conversion since the method that works for the other lenses is unreliable on this lens.

An example converted 16-50:

Please NOTE Lenses shipped to me without insurance that are lost are not my responsibility. I strongly suggest using a method with tracking and insurance but that is entirely up to you. My return postage will be based on your explicit instructions and I will not be responsible for lost items. I encourage the use of tracking and insurance.

I STRONGLY recommend that you include a letter inside the package identifying your Pentax Forums ID, the email you wish to be billed at and a contact phone number as well as full address. Ideally the letter should contain your address and mine just in case the label is lost for any reason. Finally if you include your postage instructions (insurance amount, signature required) it will make it easier. You should include not only an email for contact but also the specific email for me to send a paypal invoice to for payment.

Shipping Destinations
United States (Others considered on request)

Shipping Charge
Paid by Lens Owner

Shipping Services
USPS, UPS

Accepted Payment Types
PayPal

Return Policy & Additional Details
If I am unable to convert the lens I will not charge for the service. Lens owner is still responsible for return shipping.

Please send me a private message if interested in the service!

SDM in my lightly-used DA*16-50 bit the dust christmas weekend. I had not used it for a few months, but it was acting up a little the last time I used it. It appears to be totally dead now. Thank you for offering this service. If I can't free up time to try the fix myself over this long weekend I will likely be sending it your way.

Uncle V, if a lens is converted from SDM to screw drive is it forever that way or can it be converted back? While every experience in my life says it will never happen I still hold out that at some point Ricoh will admit guilt and fix their badly designed focusing device.

Anyway, you and I have communicated before and I'm about to have you convert my brand new (a year ago) 50 to 135 that died two weeks after arriving from B&H and I sent it under warranty one year ago this month for repair and when it returned it worked fine... for a bit... then failed again... :-(

It is as easy to revert as it is to convert. The lenses I convert I keep the original file for but even without that you can just edit the file to restore the function. Obviously if returned to the original state the lens would no longer autofocus until the SDM is repaired.

Uncle V!!!!
You are awesome! I gave the lens a trial run late last night and all I can say is WOW!!! Great job on the conversion! The lens focus super fast and is spot on every time. I've yet seen it fail to focus, and I really appreciate the quick turn around time as well. It is nice to have that baby back. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

You are making me blush! Lol. I'm so glad it helped. With you lens I learned that failing SDM can look like it is working just fine and still cause issues. I was frankly skeptical until I replicated the issue on my k-3. In any case this new info may help others.

Hi I've been trying to convert my DA*15-50 to screw drive without success. I am able to access the DEBUG MENU and download the LEENSEEP file to an SD card and then to my computer using notepad++ I then modified 16ea (C0 to 8 zero) under column 3. I copied this to an sd card and reloaded it but no go. I must be doing something wrong as the lens works on an older film camera in the screw drive mode.

Do I have to save the LEENSEEP file in Text Documents or All Files? Do I have to name the file a specific name for the lens to recognize it?

After I loaded the modified file to the lens I then attempted to down load it to a formatted SD card and there wasn't anything there.

I then reloaded the original file to the lens and then downloaded it to another formatted SD card and it (original file) was there.

So I'm assuming that I'm not making the modified card correctly for the lens to accept it.

I'm using a K10 as used by Clover in his original post.

Much thanks in advance!!!

Let's move this over to the SDM conversion thread outside the marketplace.

I quoted you and posted there. Jump over with the link and look at the last post. I hope if I can't help, someone else can who might not follow this thread since they know how to convert their own lenses.
