If anyone did not see my tests with this lens, it maintains very good IQ with both the new Pentax 1.4X TC and with the old 2XL TC. With the latter mounted, providing 800mm on FF or the FF equivalent of 1200mm on APS-C. IQ is as good as or better than the 300 f4 with the new 1.4X TC.

I'd love to see samples of this at 800mm using the 2x TC

Conditions of tests: 1) standard resolution chart; 2) 20 feet away; 3) Heavy Bogen/Manfrotto tripod with geared head; 4) illumination by single Cactus flash to left @ about 45 degrees; 5) f8; 6) focus by enlarged LV using focus peaking; 7) cable release with 2 sec delay; 8) refocus three times; 9) select sharpest image file and if necessary tweak brightness only in PP.
Below from the top:
1) 300mm + 1.4XHD uncropped
2) crop of central black resolution lines from same image file
3) deeper crop of smaller set of black resolution lines from the same image file
4) 400mm + 2XL uncropped
5) crop of central black resolution lines from same image file
6) deeper crop of smaller set of black resolution lines from the same image file

The 300mm is, of course, undergoing a greater crop in the second two images, but the 400mm + 2XL resolves smaller line sets and seems to me quite decent. However, it also appears that the 400 has some color fringing.

I recently used the 400mm + 2XL to get some picture of common mergansers. The field images did not seem to have the resolution implied by these tests - does distance make a difference? The mergansers were VERY far away.

The common merganser below was photographed yesterday (Wednesday 9th) with the Tamron 400mm + 2XL TC. The file has been processed for sharpness, contrast and luminance. The top image is uncropped. Keep in mind this image is being taken with a lens equivalent to 1200mm on 35mm, so that bird is long way away. The second image is a deep crop that I would consider marginally acceptable, but it would require something over 1000mm (over 2000mm on 35mm FF) to get such an image without cropping. If no crop were necessary, the 400 +2XL would supply good images, but this crop is deep enough to reveal the shortcomings or limitations of any 2X TC on a long lens..
