Pentax FA 135mm 2.8 haze inside (Two Pentax-F 135 sold)

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Pentax FA 135/2.8, haze from separation

Asking Price
250.00 USD

Item Location
Austin, TX (United States)

Item Description
Pentax FA 135/2.8 lens. 2 F version sold.

I really love 135mm lenses and collected many of them, mostly MF lenses. Pentax FA and F 135/2.8 are excellent lenses, particularly on FF camera. On APS camera they are a little long, but still great for head-shoulder portrait.

Pentax-FA 135/2.8. $250. Original description revised, see below This one has quite a lot marks on lens barrel; quite a few dust inside, one of them looks like a little bug! One element has haze due to separation. It affects ~50% area of that element, the center ~50% is clean. No fungus or obvious scratches can be seen. Everything works. – I guess I might ended up keep this

At first I though the lens has separation issue at the glued element and I found the haze does not affect IQ on APS and FF sensor. see grey fonts of original description.

But it is not balsam separation! The haze was due to the vaporized oil deposited on the element. Many thanks to our member “Wild Mark”! He PMed me and said: “Is the 'haze' in from of or behind the iris when looking through the front of the lens? The deented element is just behind the iris - if the haze is in from of the iris then there is a chance it is vaporised oil deposited on the element (and could possibly be cleaned)”

He is right! The haze was on the elements in front of the iris, and I was finally brave enough to disassembly the lens. It turns out super easy, just unscrew the entire front group of from barrel, so no optic element was taken off from its original position, and the bug, dust and haze were all on the rear surface of that group. I simply wiped them off and screw the assembly back, and now I have a clean lens! Still some very tiny dusts inside, one visible right under the rear-element. But that is absolutely normal for an used lens. NO HAZE, NO SEPARATION!
I tried to take some pictures of the lens after cleaning. But it turns out a little harder than I thought: I don’t have anything to focus inside the lens – it is quite clean.

Here are the photos of the lens after cleaning"

And here is the photo taken from this lens:

Sold: 2. 2nd Pentax-F 135/2.8. $280. # 1348854. Some very minor paint loss on lens barrel. Very clean glass, a few dust visible under flash light inspection. Nothing to worry about. Everything works great. No issue at all.

1. Pentax-F 135/2.8. $350. # 1348875. Almost in like new if not two small scratches on the paint of the lens barrel. Very clean glass, almost no dust visible even under flash light inspection. Everything works great. No issue at all.

I will post some photos to show the haze, and some sample photos taken from it.
The $280 one is sold.

Both F copies are sold.
I uploaded photos showing the haze under flashlight, and a sample photo from it.

No, I have never opened this lens to do any cleaning, as it still performs well. The most expensive lens I have disassembled was M50/1.4, and I have no confidence opening this lens. Otherwise the little bug must have been removed -- it is right under the front element. But I bought this used, and I know nothing about the history of the lens.

hmmmm ok thanks for that. I wonder if it is cleanable (and the haze is something other than element separation). Anyway I trust your judgement (and am tempted to try a clean).

I am sure the most eye-catching big spots in the photos -- those are dust particles and a bug -- are cleanable. It should be easy to do and can definitely make the lens looks much better. In terms of haze, I hope I can tell you that it is cleanable, but to be honest, I don't think so.

A member told me that Eric re-cemented his lens for separation issue and charged $40. I personally don't recommend that, unless the separation becomes an issue that impacts IQ obviously. If you are interested in further information about re-cement, I can PM you this member's ID so you can contact him. I don't want to post here before his permission.

You are right, it is not separation. It took me only 3 minuets to clean the dust off. Thanks a lot for encouraging me to clean it.
New photos uploaded, showing the condition of lens after cleaning. New price as well
