Indeed, I've been trying to warm up to this lens model. I"ve always liked longer than 300mm glass. the first telephoto I bought was a T-mount cheapie from Spiratone around 50 years ago.
it was a 400 f/6.3 for for will under $100. I then went to the other extreme and bought and have a Pentax-A 400 f/2.8. I'm very fond of it, but 'it's heavy'. Lately my wife has thought
I was having too much fun taking pictures, but she wanted something both long and hand holdable. I set her up with a K-3 using the Pentax F*300 4.5 and the new DA 1.4x converter.

Using elevated ISO routinely of 3200 or 6400 it works well hand held, and is hard to beat for weight.

I lately went to Alaska and took about a 1000 photos using my new K-1, mostly with the trusty Pentax-a f/2.8 and an Old Pentax 1.4x-L converter ---and some with the 2x-L converter.
but I used pretty uniformly a monopod for stability. Ideally the FA600 would have been a better choice but it wouldn't fit in a legal carry on (too long), so I am still contemplating a FF combination
at least as powerful as my wife's. This model or the 450 zoom seem in close contention for the lens part of the FF setup, but Pentax has yet to produce a FF converter that does Autofocus.

FA 400 ED for Alaska's wildlife

I've used my FA 400 ED on my K3 with superb results here in Alaska. Though not the remarkable optical results of my F300 f4.5, it is a fine match and focal length for wildlife. I recommend it highly after 20+ years using it here as a professional guide and wildlife biologist. I'm particularly sold on using it handheld by the tripod collar. Highly useful and flexible, more so than my monopod, when a tripod is not handy, or doesn't work in the bush. Don't let it get away, if at all uncertain.

Here are some hummers I took with my K-30 and the FA* 400mm F5.6, some were heavily cropped.
