Pentax 1.4x HD DA AW Teleconverter

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Pentax 1.4x HD DA AW Teleconverter

Asking Price
400.00 USD

Item Location
Pittsburgh, PA (United States)

Item Description
The 1.4x HD PENTAX-DA AF Rear Converter AW from Ricoh is compatible with Pentax KAF2 mount lenses on select DSLR cameras. It mounts between the camera body and lens, and increases the focal length of the lens by 1.4x, while reducing the aperture by 1 f/stop. The minimum focus distance of the lens is preserved, as are auto focus and auto aperture functionality. The rear converter works flawlessly with both the camera-driven AF system and the lens-driven AF system, including that of the SDM and DC-series lenses.
I have used this teleconverter primarily on the DA* 50-140mm, DA* 60-250mm, and DA 70mm Limited with stellar results. The image quality is really not diminished in the slightest. Only selling because I am selling off my Pentax gear.

Comes with original box, leather lens bag, and lens covers.

I can be a little thick sometimes, hence this question.

If using a Pentax 80 - 200mm (?) or a Tamron 70 - 300mm lens, what is the effective change in their respective improvements in use.

Not sure about improvements...I guess it depends on how you define improvement. But this teleconverter won't work with the Tamron. I honestly don't know about the Pentax 80-200. But generally speaking, the lens focal length is extended by 1.4x and you lose a stop of light as well.

You can read more about the teleconverter here:

Why shouldn't it work with either of these?

Clarification from the PentaxForums on this lens...

AF compatibility:

The lens must be F4 or faster. Slower lenses can be used, but phase detect autofocus may be unreliable and contrast detect AF (live view) is recommended instead. Curiously, the smc Pentax-DA 17-70mm F4 may not acquire focus in contrast detect mode (live view), here phase detect (viewfinder) should be used.

Cameras and lenses supported:

Pentax K-3, K-50, K-500, K-30, K-5 II, K-5 II s, K-5, K-01, K-7, K-r (all after firmware update), and newer models.

All Pentax lenses in production as of March 2014 can be used except for the following, where damage to lens or converter will occur:
• smc Pentax-DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited
• HD Pentax-DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited
• smc Pentax-DA 21mm F3.2 AL Limited
• HD Pentax-DA 21mm F3.2 AL Limited
• smc Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 XS

That's true of any zoom lens coupled with a TC, if the f stop isn't f4 or lower, the lens won't AF.

Make me an offer. Seems like people want stuff for practically free or something even if practically brand new.

I have routinely used my HD DA 1.4X with my FA* 300 F/4.5 without problems. I have used it with slower lenses in the past including an old Sigma 400 f/5.6. I would say it can reliable work on slower lens but that testing the specific combination is needed.

Image quality is very very good from this converter.

I used the Tamron 1.4 version with a FA* 300 F/4.5 and it worked fine also. If there is no interference with lens elements (Like in some SigmaTCs,) it can't hurt to try, since you can get your investment back if it doesn't work.
