Item Description
Hello,

I am not using this enough and need to make some room ... plus I have two other copies of this lens. (One of which I will put up here, too, later)

I purchased this lens here on the market place and then acquired my other copies. As can be seen there are bubbles and the blades are tarnished, but all works AOK.

More images possible upon request.

Bonjour Jean,
Out of curiosity, how do bubbles get in there, and how, if at all, do they affect images?

Sergeremy: google for schneideritis. It is actually pretty common.

Thanks Rafa, I had never heard of that. Also found out how air bubbles could get in the glass when cooling, during older production methods. And that some lenses were sought after for those bubbles. Interesting reading, thanks for the heads up.

Hi sergeremy,

Sorry, but I missed your first message. I do not recall that there was any problem ... if you are interested, I can post some sample images.

Cheers, J

Thank you, Jean, but I was just genuinely wondering how this could happen in optical glass. I've seen plenty of bubbles in glass, but never in optical glass, and found that rather strange. Schneideritis explains it well.

Never knew there was a thing like schneideritis. I am sure that the Schneider Kreuznach guys aren't too happy to have their name associated with this malady, but then again it is quite prevalent in their products.

I could not find a definitive answer to what it is and what causes it. Some say it is the glue used to cement the lens in place separating from the painted barrel. Most say that it is the paint separating from the barrel. The word is that it doesn't affect IQ, thought.

Here is another example:

If the glue used to cement doublets/triplets separates is just called "separation".

Lens separation - Camera-wiki.org - The free camera encyclopedia

Scheideritis are just air bubbles or cracks between the glass and the black paint. Some paints are prone to that. When you remove the lens element the black paint looks normal from the back side. It requires the element paint to be fully removed and then have the element repainted. The problem is finding a suitable flat paint and being able to apply it in very thin layers, so this is not easily DYI repaired.

Those part were painted black for a reason, but for mild cases Scheneideritis is harmless. Otherwise it shows as a loss of contrast.
