That's the thick strip of foam at the front edge of the focusing screen.
The mirror contacts it at the end of its travel when the shutter is released.

Replacement is relatively simple if you have tools and the correct type of foam.

Better yet send the body to Eric. He will change it along with thinner foam rear film
door light seals during standard service. He can repair the exposure meter as well.
