Item Description Asahi Pentax SMC 50mm F4.0 Macro Takumar Lens (M42):
Pentax made three 50mm Macro Lenses in the 42mm screw mount era: The Macro-Takumar 50mm F4.0 (Pre-Set Aperture), The Super-Macro-Takumar 50mm F4.0, and the SMC Macro-Takumar 50mm F4.0.
From a collector’s standpoint the rarer Macro-Takumar 50mm F4.0, with its pre-set diaphragm is more “collectable” and fetches a higher price. From a macro photographers’ standpoint this newest of the three 50mm lenses is the best from an operational perspective with its auto diaphragm and better lens coating.
While the 100mm macro lenses seem to be more popular giving a greater lens-to-subject distance the 50mm really shines when used in reverse mode, achieving almost 2x life size (1.92) with extension tubes and 3x life size (3.04) used with a bellows. The 100mm macro lenses are not suitable for reversed usage with APS-C or FF DSLRs.
This lens is similar in specifications to the K mount SMC Pentax-M 50mm F4.0 and produces sharpness, richness of colour, and contrast that equals the newer macro lenses. It is a high-performance economical choice in comparison to the current FA macro lenses, as auto focus is not a big advantage in macro photography.

Pentax Reverse Adapter (M42):
The Pentax Reverse Adaptor (M42) has a male 42mm (camera body thread) mount on one side and a male 49mm (lens filter thread) on the other side and facilitates the reversing of the camera lens to attain higher magnification values. Lenses with larger filter threads can be accommodated using a step-up adapter ring.
