IMO, a good example of lens that punches over its weight.

Years ago, I compared an SP 70-210mm F/3.5 [19AH]) to an SP 80-200mm F/2.8 [30A]. I kept (still have) the Tamron 70-210. I also tested a Vivitar Series 1 70-210 but it wasn't in the same league as the Tamrons.

Both are well made and capable of making fine images but for me, the 70-210 had the following advantages:

1) Weight is 30 oz. (850g) vs. 50 oz. (1417g)
2) The 80-200 is in every dimension (e.g. filter 77mm vs. 62mm) and that, along with the weight difference make the 70-210 easier to handle and pack.
3) Min. Focus is 33.5" (0.85m) vs. 59.1" (1.5m) for the 80-200. IMO, a significant difference.
4) It provides all of those benefits for a mere 2/3 stop reduction of max aperture which I rarely use anyway.

My 2¢ worth . . .
