PP Challenge #27-A rock and a hard place...

Welcome to the post processing challenge #27. This is one of my favorite subjects, about 1.5 hours drive to the coast from where I live. It is a great spot and I recently returned at dawn for some more shots. This one was taken as the rising sun's rays first hit the rock. The light was not fantastic and there was unfortunately not much colour in the sunrise, so let's see what we can do to rectify that!

DNG: _IGP6755.DNG
Jpeg: pp-27-sugarloaf-rock.jpg

As usual anything goes, so good luck!

Wow, a great start Simon.
Love how you brought the details out from the foreground rocks.

My shot at the challenge was limited by the JPG as for some reason I am having increasing difficulty downloading the DNGs from Mediafire. Might just be my current remote locality...

Anyways here's my entry:

Thanks Ash! I do however prefer the way you got your tones tolook on the rock island!

I too had a bit of trouble downloading the dng, but managed to get it downloaded after a few trys.

Beautiful image Oz, thanks for letting us play with it. I particularly like the semi-ghosted character of the water - very beautiful.

Here's my take on it, with my usual CS5 B&W techniques and a slight crop. Since I won the challenge just before you I'm posting this as a "Do Not Judge" entry (although feel free to critique it if you'd like).

After trying several approaches, I am going with this relatively basic enhancement in Aperture. Gorgeous location!

Handled this with my RAWDR process and a touch of extra contrast and saturation:
