Milkweed, eh? Confession, I have never observed the flowers close-up, no wonder I didn't recognize them! We do have a native milkweed here, but that species isn't native. Popular planting for butterfly gardens, I'll have to pay closer attention!

Unfortunately, the Monarch population is rapidly dwindling. The female lays her eggs exclusively on Milkweed plants. The more we plant, hopefully the longer the Monarchs

will survive. )

Indeed. We have a population of them in Florida, some resident, some migratory. I don't think I've ever seen any in the Miami area, certainly not in this neighborhood, but butterfly gardens are popular here. Hopefully the folks who cultivate them include milkweed in the plantings. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden has an outdoor butterfly garden plot for all the native species, as well as an enclosed conservatory for exotics.

Euphorbia leucocephala...a wide shot of the shrub and a tight shot of the flowers. Note that the white parts are bracts, modified leaves...the actual flowers are the itty-bitty star shapes in the center. This thing started out in a 6 inch pot about two years ago, it is now taking over the side of my shed. Due for some heavy pruning when it finishes blooming!

Thanks, Tony. It is beautiful, but it's taking over a big chunk of the yard, so I'll have to rein it in...but not until it finishes flowering!
