Some shots of the odd-colored sky we had after some evening storms:

Dust particles (scientifically called Aerosol particles) scatter light. Somewhat simplified, particles scatter mostly light with the same wave length as the particle diameter. Most is scattered forward, but some sideways and backward. The scatter is different for different wave lengths. The reason the sun set goes yellow and red is that at low solar angles the light beams pass through more atmosphere (a longer path). But you get the same effect if you have more dust than normal in the air. So my guess is that the storm might have lifted more wind blown dust into the air?
This is called Mie scattering, in difference to the scattering that the gas molecules cause, so called Rayleigh scattering, which cause the blue sky.

Thanks for the explanation, Douglas. I think you're correct about the dust. These were shots of the western sky, and there was tornado activity about 20 miles to the west, which probably kicked up some dust! I've seen this phenomenon before (oddly yellow skies) after storm activity. Great info!

Some very cool pics in this thread. I saw this rainbow colored cloud yesterday. The sun was to the top and right, but both the cloud and sun were in front of me.

That is cirrus clouds, which means ice chrystals, not droplets. So it is most likely some sort of halo phenomena, not a rainbow. But I understand you meant just that it had a color spectra showing. Best view of halos you get from Cirrus stratus clouds (large homogeneous cloud covers). With just small bits of cirrus it is hard to see what type of halo phenomena it is.
