while wandering the grounds of the Topeka Zoological Park one afternoon, I was struck by the pattern of dark and light on this tree caused by the shade thrown upon it by other trees as well as the actual texture of the bark of the tree

When all else fails, convert to BW and bump the contrast, K-1 with Tokina 500mm Mirror lens.
