One more from Iceland: this is at Þingvellir National Park and is one side of a fissure of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge:

That was really an interesting spot to visit, but despite the seeming tranquility and solidity of the spot, walking down along the fissure made me vaguely uneasy.

I know what you mean - there's something ever so slightly spooky about Iceland. Knowing you're where the ground is ripping itself apart at 25mm per year is even weirder. Great place, and I definitely want to return (haven't seen the aurora yet), but feel slightly guilty about being one of a million tourists a year in a country with only 350,000 people...

The Island, the places we stayed and the people were wonderful. Don't feel guilty. Tourism is a major source of income both generally and for many individuals and families. BTW: Did you drive across the area that was devastated by a jokulhlaup? I found that especially enlightening and frightening.

This started as a larger image of Autumn leaves against a background of duckweed-coated water.

I don't feel too guilty! Do you mean Mýrdalssandur? We didn't get any further east than Reynisfjara Beach, near Vík, so we stopped just short. We did treat ourselves to a trip up onto Mýrdalsjökull, which is ten times the size of Eyjafjallajökull and overdue an eruption....

Patterns and plains making a larger pattern of sorts. These seems to be tarpaulins that can be ordered to size and seamed all around with cords sewn into the seams if desired.
