Spitting Image

I shot this one late last summer at the Detroit Zoo.

This is at the entrance to the amphibian house.

The first statue pair is at a nearby modern art museum. The two are on opposite sides of a glass sheet that is part of the entrance. The second cluster is up along the Gaspe at a motel and restaurant owned by the artist. There are scores of similar statues in all sizes all over the place - along walkways, in the garden, on the beach, out in the waves and farther out in water and on tethered rafts offshore. They seem to made primarily of cement over chicken wire, but also carved from wood (especially those inside in the lobby, the restaurant, the hallways). You can purchase wooden ones in various sizes. What do they mean if anything? Had the faint idea he was making a statement about immigration to the Americas, but it could be that he was just trying to sell souvenir copies.

Not the best of pictures, but here's another piece from Mark di Suvero, who did the sculpture in the previous post. This one's on the campus of the University of Nebraska - Lincoln.

A Nordic, pile-of-rocks style statue high on a mountain, well into the overcast on this day. We could not make out who it represented or memorialized.
