Fly, and I have no more specific id at the moment. It is a predatory species as it is holding and feeding upon another insect.

A different species of butterfly than the one I recently posted on the "Show me your insects" thread, but also feeding on or ingesting some kind of salt = mineral from a very barren-looking road. If you look closely, you can see the extended proboscis in the second image. They were landing in the sunniest patches on a clear day so the lighting is very harsh/contrasty.

that is actually the out of focus surface of the pond with its masses of algae

not very pretty if in focus

the photos I took of the dragon flies yesterday was the first time I had tried to get them this year
