Tiny little fly. By eye I could only see it as a dark speck with a spot of orange-red. Taken in the field, but such a small insect really called for a more specialized lens and a focusing rail.

and, after gathering all that equipment, the fly would thank you for its moment in the sun by flying away...

Precisely. I just knew if I went back to the house to get appropriate equipment, which would have taken at least 30 minutes, the fly simply would not have been patient and waited for my return, and if it had, the moment I got the rig set up, the fly framed and focused, it would decamp.

Here's another tiny insect from the same outing, a beetle. Two insects and one jumping spider that I found that morning were too small for the macro equipment I brought, so excessive cropping was required to get a suitable image for posting.

I posted a different image of this familiar species of leaf hopper above, but on a later outing I got a much better angle on one.

A welcome sight around here. A monarch just on some wild flowers.

This particular species (Heloconius hecale I believe) from So. America seems to do well in captivity. Essentially every butterfly zoo I've visited has many of these flying about.

Those are by far the most common butterfly at the annual exhibit held here every spring. They probably outnumber all the other species combined.
