Cool! A Monobia wasp, they're late-season predators. I never see them earlier than September. Monobia quadridens is the common one here.

apparently known as a great pollinator and predator of caterpillars as well

Yeah, I think that's where all the tussock moth caterpillars go this time of year...
Without wasps we'd have serious problems with our gardens.

Smartweed or knotweed is a weedy little plant with pink flower heads. Like many other weedy flowers, it's really important for insects. Many of these flowers are also beautiful when viewed up close.

Some more familiar wasps - Polistes fuscata. These are the black/yellos/brown paper wasps you'll see everywhere, they're such calm subjects too.
