the end of summer normally signals the seasonal die-off of some insects; this bumblebee showed little reaction to my attention, so I don't think she had much longer

If some of the insect images I'm posting now look familiar, it's because they are seconds of images I posted earlier.

Thanks. It was one of four files remaining in the big storage (I may have deleted really poor ones). I judged one of those four as slightly better than this one in some minor way so that's the one I processed and posted some years ago.

That's a male. He's probably just taking his time waking up, no need to rush unless the gynes are out. Then it's game time.

Ambush bug. When you get up close to one of these little fellows, they really look sinister.

And once you start keying in on their colors you'll see these Jagged Ambush Bugs everywhere. On nearly every flower head in the mid/late summer. Business is good, I suppose.

Hereabouts at this time of year I see them regularly on the black-eyed Susan (or similar GDYC's) and Queen Anne's Lace, but although they are common, ubiquitous, far from every flower has an assassin bug.

The tiny Lasioglossum bees, a catch-all of numerous species, most of which can't be identified by a photo. Like many tiny bees and other insects they love to land and lick salt off people. I hope sunscreen isn't bad for them.
