........it was covered by little flies, which I noticed while doing PP. This crop is really too much for the one-inch sensor of the CPPS, but I thought it was interesting

Very interesting, indeed. I've been a bit obsessed trying to photograph the tiny wasps and flies. My best shots still tend to be happy accidents.

Here's Sphex nudus, a Katydid-hunting wasp, another of the big Sphex group.

I've just gone through all the wasps in my big insect book and have concluded.... I think it's a wasp. Or maybe a hornet. Couldn't find anything with those particular antennae. Sharpness of the front part isn't the best but I thought some of you might enjoy the challenge.

Antennae are articulated, wasps often curl the tips around for...reasons.
I think this is one of the Polistes fuscata paper wasps, or one of the relatives. They're pretty variable. They're amazing hunters, we'd drown in spiders etc. without them!

Thank you - but I'm not seeing so many spiders to photograph this year!

Have not seen a thread for this subject, though I have seen a few photos of insects, mostly on POTW threads. Lets see those fantastic macro shots. Do not want to set any limits to how many photos can be posted, but lets try and make them interesting, and scary And yes spiders are allowed.
Should be interesting. I'll start with a few from my collection.
Relay nice shots

A fly, I only know a few of the dipterans well, and this is not one I can put a more exact name upon.

MONSTER!!! I tried to get a stack of this fellow, but it did not turn out as well as I hoped. It is barely one millimeter long - thank your lucky stars - and it's probably a nymph judging from the underdeveloped wings. The image isn't that great, but I thought the nightmarish subject would justify posting.
