The first sighting of an adult mourning cloak is a sure sign of Spring here. They are welcome, but NOT the caterpillars. They can swarm by the hundreds on certain species of tree and eat virtually every leaf just when those are developing in the Spring. Two years back I had to strip them off a young hackberry we had planted

The last two are really "pretty" = nice colors as well as good insect photos.

Depending, this is a stink bug, a leaf bug or a shield bug, but without a doubt it is a true bug.

Two variations on grasshopper. A lot of these around at the moment. These may be distinct species as I can see several small differences.

I think the wasp is Scolia dubia, a very beneficial wasp. Blue winged wasp, Scolia dubia?is a real asset!

Spread-winged damselfly, Lestes family, not a dragonfly. I don't know the family well enough to hazard a species guess, but I don't think it's Lestes rectangularis - the Slender Spreadwing, which we see most commonly here. Maybe disjunctus? They are striking insects, though, and big for damselflies. You can tell it's a damselfly by the eyes as most distinctive morphology.

The butterfly is of course a Monarch.

The Scolia dubia, it should be mentioned, is no relation to that cartoon dog, the Scoobia doobia.

A little leafhopper, curious-looking insect. I'm going to post an slightly different image of this same fellow in the "show me" insect thread.
