Paleo Pete....that was quite a poser.

I can see the connection with 'flat', 'clay' and 'submerged' but where does the 'rust and figurative light bulb' come in ?

OK...

Rust - Where does the red coloration of red clay come from? Oxidation...rust.

Light Bulb - ever watch Tom and Jerry, Roadrunner, or a dozen other cartoons, when a character gets a "bright idea" that little light bulb pops on above his/her head...from the old saying about a light bulb going on in your head when you get a good idea.

Great one Pete, I never thought of the red clay and did not know that was the cause. I've learned something new!

Thanks for the fun.

Ramsey - I'm not positive that's the reason for the color, it's a guess but an educated guess...not many other things in nature produce a red color especially in soil. I may have read about this in science class or educational readings along the way too, but I can barely remember last week, much less a book 20-40 years ago...I still read a lot of educational material, but the old memory isn't what it was back then...

So it's a guess, but probably correct or very close to it...most reddish soils have that coloration for the same reason, rust. I found out when touring the Painted Desert the purple color is from Manganese oxidation...same principle...

You are of course correct. Was thinking 'rust' as in metal and got fixed on that. The light bulb threw me. Must think more laterally in future

BTW you realise there've been 430 or so views on the thread. You stumped a lot of people.

Yep The french designed hydro turbine blades for an abandoned hydro electric generating facility. I think they were installed around 1927.
