Jools - nice mystery man. Perfect for OOF.

I've been toying more with this style during my SiS II shooting and find that it's not just a choice of your off-focus setting, but the DOF due to f-stop is a huge factor in the overall impression of the shot. Here's a comparison from today's shooting, I only changed the f-stop.

SMC K 1:1.8/55 @ f/8

SMC K 1:1.8/55 @ f/3.2

The greater DOF in the first shot almost makes you wonder if the shot was supposed to be sharp and the photog just muffed it up. It does have good layers and definition though. The more open shot is much flatter, some of the straight lines become more wavy, but it has a more "watercolor" feel.

Lesson learned is to take quite a few shots at different f-stops and/or oof amount so that when you look at it on a larger screen, you can pick the combination that's just right.

London at night

Some scenes are better deliberately blurred.
Virtually the same scene, seconds and a twist apart. And yes, I know the second one is also blurry. I was running to catch up with a group and stopped very briefly to play.

Shot out in a pretty good wind, tiny amount in focus but I like the balance.

Some neat photos here and some that make me queasy - but I think that is a legitimate brain reaction to seeing things out of focus.

I posted this one recently for a weekly challenge, but I think it qualifies here too. I can't tell you what I was focusing on, other than to try to capture both the window pane and the outside world such that both could be recognized.
