Bunches of new benches -- a good thing! -- at the botanic garden, most of them look like this (unfortunately; they used to have a very eclectic assortment of benches, not nearly enough of them for tired feet in 83 acres, but visually more interesting)

At Huckworthy Bridge. As pleasant a spot to sit for a while on a sunny day as you'll ever find.

Lovely scene, but that looks substantially cloudy to a desert dweller like me.

Yep, I lived in Scottsdale for a couple of years back in the early eighties and I remember the endless days of sunshine with happiness. The warmest summer day on Dartmoor is about the same as the coolest winter day in Arizona, but other than that the two places have got a surprising amount of similarities. They've both got wide open spaces where you can go hiking without seeing another human being, and they've both got landscapes with their own bleak beauty that'll kill you if you wander out there unprepared. Of course Arizona alone is bigger than the entire UK so the wide open spaces there are a hundred times the size of Dartmoor, but in British terms our little 365 square mile patch of moorland counts as wilderness.

I did a survey on Dartmoor some years back when the rest of the UK was suffering from a heatwave. Working conditions on the moor were very pleasant indeed that time!
