Not sure what bird this is - would have to look it up.
Yes, as noelcmn suggested, it is a species of crake/rail: it looks like a Black Crake (Zapornia flavirostra).

Pretty deep crop of an image from a Bigma stretched to the nominal 500mm (actually more like 450mm).

Cryptically colored female bird.
Lovely shot of a roller, nc. Whenever we encountered one during our tour, I'd catch my breath at their colors.

Thanks W. And it also leaves me breathless, despite that I have seen thousands of them. Did I mention that Shaka, King of the Zulu, had the feathers of this bird as part of his royal headgear? He had good taste.
Here's a close relative-which also leaves me breathless

Another NA bird with lovely feathers even if they're monochrome.
Did not know that about Shaka. The Hawaiian rulers had capes entirely covered with honey-creeper feathers, and feathers from some particularly uncommon species were especially favored for accent feathers on headpieces. It's not only Europeans who are responsible for endangering the wildlife. Too many humans of any kind, good or bad, spoil anything and everything.
