This Icelandic pair look like gulls, but they are fulmars. Shouldn't the gulls above be sitting in a hot tub?

Nope, there isn't any water left in California for hot tubs. Here is a ring-billed gull looking pretty upset about that.

Well, they're in the tub taking a sand bath as many passerines do.
This is about an 8-file stitch of kittiwakes atop a breakwater or similar protective structure. At this scale individual birds are just white spots, but I was interested in the uniformity of their self-spacing, like commuters on a semi-empty subway car.

A more dis-organised gathering of coots, the most I have ever seen together. A lot more than this image shows. Probably about 100+.

I was just getting ready and I'm grounded, I mean watered, or oceaned - - something. I think the AF fixed on the foreground, judging from the sharpness of waves. This is a deep crop. The duck was a long way out.

Red-necked phalarope, which looks vaguely similar at a quick glance.

Ethiopian Snipe, which I got yesterday at Rietvlei Nature REserve. only the 2nd time I have seen a Snipe, the last time was about 20 years ago, so mega happy to have got this one. The other was the Great snipe. There are only 3 species around here, and they are masters of camouflage. 1 more to go .

Do you maintain a "life list" noelcmn? Fairly popular thing to do here. Many bird field guides have check-off life lists in the back.
