Found another image of this western lizard that seems to be very common in southern Utah. Not the same individual posted earlier - taken a different day at a different location.

Photographed in the wild? I've had the impression that echidnas were very rare.

Hi Walt. This was taken in the wild, but they are not rare. They usually stay out of sight foraging for ants and termites. Their suit of " armour " is quite a defense against most natural predators, but the introduced English fox plays havoc with most of our native species. Feral cats are also a big problem here. I was able to get very close to my little subject with this shot. They don't move very quickly because they don't have to and show no fear when approached carefully. When they feel threatened they roll up into a ball with those spikes forming a 360 degree barrier.

Glad to hear they're still doing reasonably well. There are precious few species of egg-laying mammals left (the North American Easter Bunny does not count).

All this random unscientific discarding of the Easter bunny around here is disconcerting. I'm sure it has something to with Christmas. Such prejudice!

my thoughts on the top issue of the day - the Easter Bunny

like some of the birds pictured here, (the yellow-billed storks)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4624424/

I always thought the Easter Bunny as a delivery system, kinda like UPS, USPS, Fed Ex etc. etc. etc. and so forth and so on. I never thought of the Easter Bunny as an "egg laying mammal"
