Wish I had those 18 year old eyes back. Did not think twice about manual focus back then. AF was a still a dream, wasn't it!

I have autofocus (and exposure) tied to the center spot only. It seems to help. But as you note, it's not foolproof. Most the time I get by with exposure
tied to the center spot. But once in a while it comes back to haunt me.

How do you guys set things up?

while asking questions, I wonder how many of these photos are captured.

Are people out walking, riding in vehicles, hiding in blinds, etc, etc, etc and so forth and so on.

Hand held vs. monopod vs. tripod?

we are already identifying where the photos come from - captured (zoo) vs. free roaming

just curious, is anyone else wondering about this stuff???

[not passing judgment, imho, all photos are worthy]

Generally mine would all be hand held, though of late I am using the tripod more and more. In Game/Nature Reserves like Kruger/Pilansberg I usually use a bean bag. I also made my own car window mount a few years ago, which I also use in Kruger. For bird hides I always use a bean bag. Macro shots are always with a tripod.
Unless otherwise stated, most of my wildlife shots are free roaming game, usually taken from a car, or a hide. Or at a picnic spot, camps or vista spots. I find with photography any hard and fast rule soon becomes a soft useless rule and missed opportunities.

Most of my shots are hand held, either walking through zoos/parks.

100 % of my photos from Africa are from the one safari we took in Tanzania in late june/ early July 2016 (celebrating our 25th Wedding anniversary) and most of those were shot from the top of our extended Toyota Land cruiser with bean bag support and engine off

I started using a tripod whenever possible way back in the film era, and using both tripod and flash for macro work. My images are invariably better, both IQ and composition, with a higher percent of keepers if I use a tripod. But - while tripods are the single best way to improve images, they are also the accessory we love to hate. Sometimes it isn't possible to use one, for example in museums and when in a tour group, and sometimes a tripod is just too slow. There's a deer! The tripod is attached to my camera backpack - put down backpack - undo the buckle - extend the legs and lock in place - spread legs - set tripod in place - adjust leg lengths if tripod is too crooked - zip open backpack - take out 300 f4 - remove rear cap - pick up camera - remove normal zoom - put rear cap on normal zoom - put normal zoom into backpack - attach 300 to camera - remove front cap and put in pocket - remove tulip hood - reverse tulip hood and fumble getting it aligned and attached - fumble trying to slide into the Arca-Swiss clamp - test clamping so camera & lens won't slip out - take out cable release - flip out the rubber cable-release socket cover - fumble around trying to align the cable release plug - loosen ball-head - turn on camera. Now, where is that deer?? GONE! OK, reverse sequence and put everything back where it was. Well, I can use the exercise.
