That is cool. Very rare to see an echidna in a zoo here, I can only vaguely remember seeing one many years ago.
Thanks Walt. Some animals are not suited to a zoo environment, and I think this is one of them. In the wild, these little ones find a termite or ant nest, feast, and then move to the next one.

the unfortunate truth is that any zoo is a poor substitute for nature

however they do have their purposes and I would never advocate for their elimination.

It does sadden me when I know how limited in space and environment these magnificent animals are placed into by the zoos. certainly most zoos are doing their bests for their animals and the old road side "zoo" with animals displayed in small iron cages are no longer common as far as I know.

Very true Allen. Many animals are only going to be seen in zoos in the decades to come. We are the only species that lives outside nature, and that could ( and probably will ) be our undoing.

there are many species (if "species" is the correct term to use to include animals, fish and plants) that now only exist in "captivity,"

Too true, and diversity is lessening every year.

such is the price of "progress"

but honestly would we live without such "progress"

without it, many of us couldn't live where we do

Don't forget too the efforts that are being made by wildlife enthusiasts and others, to re-train some of these rare species for life in wild again with some degree of success. That holds out some hope, despite the "human condition" with which we struggle.

Pere David's Deer is one success of keeping an animal in captivity, although not actually in a zoo. The species did go extinct in the wild.

The enthusiasts do a magnificent job with rehabilitation Noel, but I think that they are outnumbered 100 to 1 with others who benefit from the animals habitat.

thus is man's history.

we change our environment to suit us and as a result plants and animals suffer.

a wise practice???

well that can depend on your point of view and the long term effects

imagine our earth without pollinators

not good

IMHO, YMMV

I like that image Aslyfox.

I used to tell my ecology students that the key word for human interaction with anything natural was "management." Even though plants, animals, and the environment have been surviving and mostly thriving for more than three thousand millions years (excepting disasters every few hundred million years), we think we can do better. Like most primates, we cannot keep our busy hands off of anything. Which contributes to understanding LBA.
