Looks like we went to the same place. Not sure whether it is the same heron.

if you were at or on a small concrete bridge spanning the stream we probably were.

we were there on June 27/28 staying at the Tarangire Safari Lodge

These finches have been cooperative about posing at the feeder.

one of my favorite scenes from the Tarangire National Park in Tanzania

early morning find of a group of two mature lioness with cubs getting ready for lessons on hunting

when we first found them, they were just relaxed overlooking a very small water source and then they gathered themselves to head off

Managed about an hour and a half this morning trying to get pictures of hooded mergansers. Here's a drake and hen. Unfortunately, because they all seem to have their partners for the year, none of the drakes I saw was putting up their hood in display.

So are those hoodless mergansers then?

I remember when I first saw the drake Wood Duck in its eclipse (late summer non breeding plumage) phase - what, that can't be a Wood Duck

It was effectively like you described it, in september.
No Kingfisher.
We saw a Nile Varan close to the heron, and an Aegyptian goose:

I didnt post the photograph of the varan, because it looked dull, as it was the same colour as the rock where it was sunbathing, with a zenithal sun that didnt help to give a nice texture.

leopard

we found leopards in two different trees twice in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania

and once on the ground running quickly, too fast for any photos in front of the vehicle in the Lake Manyara National Park

While waiting for mergansers to show themselves, there were plenty of Canada geese willing to pose for pictures.
