Got one this morning after my patiently waiting for him to land on a branch rather than the feeder:

real nice, photolady!

Here's a juvenile red-bellied woodpecker (I think--I'm a bit perplexed by the total absence of even a tinge of red on the belly or head.)

Most interesting -- the exception that proves the rule, perhaps. Belly does seem to have a hint of buff, and assuming you shot this near home I can't imagine what else it could be. Is this shot with the Sigma 500/4.5?

Thanks Dave. I don't know if that bird is a juvenile Red-bellied either. I have two that come to my feeder daily. I guess they could be if in a different stage of growing. Cornell labs says they yellowish on the nape and around the edge of the bill. I don't see that in yours or in mine, etiher. Still it's a nice shot.

Here is the one I got:

From looking over the results of a Google image search on juvenile red-bellied woodpecker, I'd say this coloration is pretty common; my guess is they are young juveniles. Not that I trust the search that much (clearly some other species also make it in there), but again for eastern US the red-bellied is the only reasonable match.
