Yes, that Zanesville story (mentioned in the Jack Hanna article) is appalling. But you'd have to say that the capturing and keeping of wild animals in many parts of the world far eclipses (probably relatively isolated) incidents in the USA.
As for the presenters, the ones mentioned - Irwin, Cousteau, Hanna - are/were showmen; that's not to disparage their level of knowledge, but I don't think they can be compared to David Attenborough. What they all have in common is passion, and the ability to raise awareness of the wonders of (and threats to) nature in an increasingly urbanized world.
