nice

but misnamed, at least in my area,

don't see many of them at all so " uncommon " would be more correct

Well around here they are considered "Common" in that they are more often seen than many other- e.g. the shy Reed Buck, and the Mountain Reed Buck, which I did see on the same occasion, but it disappeared before I could say Pentax. The latter I am still hoping to get a decent pic of.

Finally found some critters on this last trip through Denali National Park. Spring's been late coming this year (it snowed last weekend) and everyone's feeling it. Mama Moose and her calves near the entrance to the park.

Rhino to rhino-horn hunter: "If this thing had aphrodisiac properties, do you think we rhinos would be an endangered species?"

Actually, the real threat to rhinos is the demand for a janbiya (numerous spelling variants) by wealthy Arabic men. A janbiya is a curved dagger with a ridge down the center with a handle made of rhino horn. It is part of their traditional dress as an adult male (14 or older). Any family with sufficient money will go to great lengths to get a proper janbiya for their son(s), and nothing is an acceptable substitute for the rhino-horn handle. There are many wealthy Arabic families, so there are many young men who MUST have a rhino-handled janbiya as a mark of attaining manhood. Such traditions die very, very hard. Remember the movie where Lawrence is given such a dagger?

not necessarily rhinos, bears, elephants, tigers lions and other species sought for trophies or fabled " medical " reasons but other endangered species are more in danger due to lack of habitat because of man's encroachment into the animals' territory

Yes. Habitat destruction is surely the worst threat, but it is only a symptom of (here I mount my high horse) too many people . In the western USA especially, bears are poached for their gall bladders to be used in traditional oriental medicines (especially in China).

Which brings me brings me to this lady and her three cubs (one hard to see in this image) who came down through my wildflower garden to raid the bird feeders. The sow looked very healthy. White spots on her ears are ticks.

Maybe I should have run out and purchased a gun and shot the four of them. Their gall bladders would have funded the purchase of a new lens or camera body.
