Last of the rose-breasted grosbeak images for a while, at least until I get to any unprocessed files good enough to PP for the RTP folder.

You can buy these frogs. The frogs themselves aren't poisonous. In the wild they eat ants. The ants are toxic and the poison builds up in the frog's body. The poison wears off if the frogs are fed non-poisonous insects.

I think I posted this image years ago, maybe. There is a second image of this bird which is a bit better, and I'm certain I posted that one. Blind lucky that the sun hit the wings just right to define the feathers.

Another picture of this spoonbill who posed a long time for me. Here he may just have noticed his own reflection. Question: is he amazed and pleased, or shocked and horrified? I would guess the former. I never look as good in a photograph as I do in a mirror, and not as good in a mirror as in slightly ripply water.

Phoebe nest from several years back. They nested in this same spot atop a light out on the deck a couple years, as phoebes have substantial nest-loyalty. However, I subsequently worked hard to clean off every trace of their presence, as it does make a mess, and Annabelle always sees them and is lurking about when the the young start leaving the nest. They do so before they can fly, so they are easy prey.

Yes. Habitat destruction is surely the worst threat, but it is only a symptom of (here I mount my high horse) too many people . In the western USA especially, bears are poached for their gall bladders to be used in traditional oriental medicines (especially in China).

Which brings me brings me to this lady and her three cubs (one hard to see in this image) who came down through my wildflower garden to raid the bird feeders. The sow looked very healthy. White spots on her ears are ticks.

Maybe I should have run out and purchased a gun and shot the four of them. Their gall bladders would have funded the purchase of a new lens or camera body.

Looks like a dump bear to me. Wild bears who don't live near dumps cover up to 40 km a day and are a lot leaner. The dump bears also tend to be a lot nastier.

In this area pretty much all bears are scroungers in whatever humans discard. There human population is too dense hereabout for bears to avoid, ignore or remain ignorant of the opportunities set out around homes and businesses.
