Thanks! I was hoping to get something a bit more exotic from yesterday's outing but common birds can be fun when conditions are right.

Getting Ready for Winter

I used to assume that woodpeckers were exclusively insectivores. Wrong.

Nice capture on the Red-bellied.

I knew they ate seeds. They do rob my bird feeders of the sunflower seeds,

Awesome shot Dave! I've never seen a Woodpecker with a nut of any kind - makes me wonder what this winter will bring.......

Thanks! I've seen them stash cherries in that tree too (also Blue Jays come behind the woopeckers and raid the stash. )

Nice capture Dave - but how does he consume that acorn? Hammer at it the same way he would the side of a tree?

Yep, parks it in a cavity of the tree and then whacks away at it--same with the cherries (but that gets messy.)

Angry Bird

This small (probably juvenile) rainbow lorikeet started screeching at me as I walked past its tree. It became even more agitated when I stopped and pointed a lens at it. I had my FA 77 Ltd on my K-5 and didn't have my camera bag with me, so I couldn't swap to a lens less susceptible to purple fringing. This was a high-contrast shot, so it's to be expected. I could have gone narrower, I suppose, but I wanted the bokeh effect. Eh. Live and learn.
