M had the same attitude toward whip-poor-will. When she was a kid one would set up outside her bedroom at night and "whip, whip, whip" for three to five hours. I experience that a few times when visiting her parents early in our marriage. You cannot imagine how at 2 or 3AM you get an intense craving for whip-poor-will stew.
This bird is not known for singing, yet there are some who don't welcome its company.
