Redshanks. I think this one was getting a little nervous as I approached and was thinking about leaving.

Am I right that they aren't often found on shiny surfaces?

I don't think they are all that picky.

My only sighting of the Brown chested Snake Eagle, which has, of late, been successfully breeding at Rietvlei Nature Reserve.

Two small birds that are challenging to photograph; the rufous hummingbird and wrentit. The wrentit never stops moving in dense cover, at least the hummingbird will perch in the open sometimes.

Common snipe
Nice, sharp shot, especially considering how skittish snipe are when encountered away from concealing marsh vegetation. If this was taken in North America, the American Ornithologists' Society Check-List Committee recently (probably after you took the photo) declared the North American snipe distinct enough from Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) to merit its own species, Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata) (more tail feathers than European Common Snipe, among other things). It is named for Alexander Wilson, the Father of American Ornithology, poet, and ex-con. The publication of one of his poems resulted in his imprisonment for libel in his native Scotland and he emigrated to the U.S. upon serving his sentence. The American Ornithologists' Society was recently formed by the merger of the American Ornithologists' Union and the Cooper Ornithological Society.

The snipe was photographed in Iceland, so it is probably the (European) "common snipe."
