Here's an image that has "heart stopping" written all over it- A fledgling Weaver, fallen form the nest, into the crocodile infested Lake Panic in Kruger Park. We all watched with bated breath as it scampered from one island to another, hoping to get to the shore, not that it was safer there. Old image from 2009

Deer in the Quabbin reservoir. Hunting is not allowed, so they are poached (not roasted, baked or fricasseed)

Burrowing Owls Athene cunicularia

Burrowing Owl Overview, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology

photographed while attending my first Wings and Wetlands Festival - Wings & Wetlands Birding Festival – Kansas Wetlands Education Center - ( held every two years - already plaining to attend again )

It is held in Great Bend Kansas and obviously the participants did not limit themselves to what could be found in the wetlands

( owls, prairie dogs and horses were on private property and owner was not happy with all the people who attended the festival coming by to photograph his pastures from the public road - he even called the Sheriff on my group but we had the right to photograph from public road way [ we also had the long time assistant County Coroner driving the vehicle, along with an licensed attorney among the 4 people in the car ] )

First Eastern Phoebe I've saw this year, but I haven't been out much. I had the HD DA 55-300mm PLM instead of the DA* 300, but a decent result.

during the Wings and Wetlands festival in Great Bend, there was a side trip for a limited number ( first come, first serve ), a chance to see, hear and photograph Greater Prairie Chickens. one on Saturday and one on Sunday after the end of the festival. I got to go on Sunday. It was the first time I had ever seen or heard them.

[ this is on private land and access is carefully controlled to protect the birds, so access is limited by number and duration - two blinds with the birds being within 30 - 50 yards away. [ they neglected to tell us until we were leaving, otherwise, I would have turned off the GPS. ] They took the blinds out later that day. for more info you could attempt to contact the Kansas Wetlands Education Center: http://wetlandscenter.fhsu.edu/]
