A Surprise Guest

When I stumbled out on to the porch this morning, I was startled to find this Osprey in the dead oak out back. I'd actually gotten a glimpse of him/her from afar about a week ago but was unable then to imagine what it was. Ospreys are native to Maryland of course but I've never seen one here in the city where I've lived most of my 70 years. I suspect it may have been released recently from the raptor rehab center across the stream valley. I doubt it will hang around too long: the stream just isn't big enough to feed it.

Excellent, I saw one here for the first time this year a few weeks ago. I hope I can book some shoots with a couple of these families.

Another Surprise

It ain't much of a photo--more just for the record. It's an Eastern Red Bat (I think.) I spotted him while I was out pulling vines off my trees yesterday. My first thought was that it was some sort of fruit--a peach? in April? on a holly? Naturally, I decided to quit working and leave him in peace.

So cool Dave! I never knew they roosted outside like that - always thought it was in some kind of structure or cave.

Good thing you realized it was not a fruit - image your surprise if you grabbed it!

Me, neither. We don't have caves around here but plenty of bridges and abandoned structures. I'm embarrassed to say the vines had created a pretty substantial canopy, too.

Serious compliment coming from you Travis!! I'd be lying if I didn't say I was using your shots this year as a benchmark for my own progression. I got a late start this year since the eagles didn't come back to where I saw them last year and I had to go further to find mine. Good in flight shots eluded me, I always seemed to be too far away or as silly as it sounds too close. What I could have done with a Sigma 300-800mm f5.6 (sigh). Thanks again!!

Yet Another!

A raccoon under my front porch.

If this keeps up, I'll start work on an ark.
