" what sharp teeth "

the rest of the story -

working as Docent at the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center, saw some folks messing with rocks near a closed exhibit. they had found this wild brown bat in the rocks. It was extremely frightened and I covered it with a rock. later it crawled out from underneath the rock and was calm. I waited 45 minutes until paid staff showed up to move it. It was placed out of the way and on a post so it could fly. I learned that bats cannot take off from the ground

we had to move it so kids walking on the rocks would not hurt it

Pied oyster catcher, not taking flight, just stretching and running into a gentle surf after being relieved of nest-duty by its mate.

Another shot of those Cheetah at Rietvlei Nature Reserve that formed part of a breeding programme. They have since been removed, and from what I can gather, a similar project is not planned as the cheetah decimated some of the game in the reserve.

. I am tempted to say TIA- This is Africa- anything is possible. But I'll claim the stupidity and carelessness! And apologise and rectified it.

Nice shots! I've been wanting to get a photo of a Blue-tongue for years, but I haven't seen any.

It looks like you added a lot of birds to your life list on the trip! For some reason in Australia it's called the Darter or Snake-bird in Australia, but the Anhinga in the USA, even though the Australian species name is still Anhinga novaehollandiae.
Hoping you and all who you know and love are safe from the fires raging in Australia. Wishing you early abundant rain.
I'm posting this on several threads, to let all our Pentaxian friends down under know we are thinking of them, and their country.

Thank you! I have friends and family in New South Wales and Queensland in areas which are affected by the fires and today's "catastrophic" fire danger declaration. They are all OK at this point, but with strong winds and dry air, that could change quickly. I believe that the fires have currently affected around 8,500 square kilometres (3,281 square miles), and areas have burned which ordinarily never would. I just hope that they can catch any new fires early before they spread.

Blue-faced honey eater, which was behaving like a pigeon scrounging for food around some outdoor tables. Some of its color changed dramatically depending on whether it was more in the sun or in the shade of the umbrellas. The first image, in the sun, has colors that match a field guide description. The orange-brown of the back in the second image when the bird is in the shade.is not correct. I suspect some of the back color is generated by diffraction rather than pigment, so it is lost in the shade.

Australian fig bird, making noises no doubt in hopes of attracting a mate.
