Those are some great Shots , Stan, there's way to many hunters (and probably poachers) around here for us to see much of anything like that, although there is a protected elk herd just to the south of us. Eagles are slowly making there way back after having been poisoned in the 40s.

Thank you Norm!

The same happened to the elk around here many years ago. The game commission then reintroduced the herd with some doaners from the Rocky Mountains. The herd is closely monitored and is now numbered at 700+. A few years ago they opened up a very selective hunting season which starts in a couple weeks. The licenses number around 10-15 depending on how much they want to trim the herd. The licenses are only available by a lottery drawing which is pure profit for the game commission. If you win a license, you have to take a course for training.

So the herd is very well protected. Plus, since they have no natural predictors, they are very docile. I was 20 feet away from one of them and all he did was give me a concerned eye ball. Not so good if you come around a bend in your vehicle - they just don't move.

It's much the same around here Stan. They were hunted to extinction, then a new herd started with elk from out west, and they are now up to a population of over 500. The first hunt was last year. My buddy got a tag, but like deer, once hunting season started was they became very scare and I don't think either Paul or Bung (my acquaintances) got an Elk. Paul has seen them from time to time in the fields on the way to Bancroft where we shop, but I've never seen them, and the farmers are getting grumpy. 40-60 elk in a field can apparently eat a lot of crops before the farmers can run them off. We have eastern wolf here, so I can't say they won't have any predators, but the locals will shoot wolf on site, despite the protections so I'm pretty sure down where the herd is they aren't running in big enough packs to take these guys on.

There at one time were caribou in this country, so I'd much rather see caribou here than elk, but they need a lot more dense bush with no roads than elk. Anyway, one of these days, I'll get a picture of one.

Redstart stretching... unfortunatly the busy bokeh messes up the shot somewhat.
