SCAN. A toad that's partially buried itself. They dig with their back feet and back down below the ground litter. Watching this eastern American toad do it, it's easy to visualize how spade foot toads evolved.

A sign of the season: the frogs in my neighbor's pond have emerged and launched--without hesitation--into carousing & debauchery.
I didn't, however, get any good shots of frogs in flagrante.
