Originally posted by WPRESTO Those turned out fine. We came across an eastern diamondback that was crossing the road during a trip in Florida, back in the film era. I stopped & got out of the car to take a couple of pictures (poor) while wife & daughter threw forty conniptions in the car. But, the eastern diamondback is reasonably docile, especially compared to the western version that is notorious for lifting the front third of its body off the ground into threat-strike posture. The one I was photographing didn't even rattle.
This one did not rattle at all, another guy that came along was watching it with me and after I had taken photos he wondered what it would take to make it move, safely. He gently tossed small pebble and it bounced and rolled right up to the snake, it did not budge. While I was there it lifted it's tail a little once, and was occasionally wagging it's tongue. At first when it did not move I had thought maybe it had been run over ( a car driving too fast for the road passed me a few minutes earlier), but there were no signs of injury. I also thought maybe it just ate a big meal and was lethargic, maybe. It was not needing warmth, as it was about 85-90F. I did read where the females bask in the sun prior to giving birth. After about ten minutes watching it I moved on past it. When I came back that way 20-30 minutes later it was gone.
