what is it
FREEZE!!!! Do not get it annoyed. If possible, let it think you're a tree or rock. If there's a tree or rock at hand, very close, let the tree or rock face off with the bison. BTW: I have found that the best time to move if you must or should, when you don't want to arose or spook a mammal, is to do your moving slowly and carefully when the animal's head is down feeding. But they raise their head and go back on alert suddenly, so be prepared to FREEZE again.

very good advice

if you weren't wise to begin with and the " wee beastie " is actually quite a bit farther out than it appears in the photo

several hundred yards a way as a matter of fact

be very glad you have a good telephoto

I thought this fellow should be kept separate from the pair in noelcmn's post above. This is a family-friendly website.

When I was young and my grandparents still had the N. Minnesota farms, I used to walk up to deer that way at dusk. Considered it a success if I got to a stone's throw and often succeeded. (You have to be aware of the wind, of course.)
