Wood duck, probably the most colorful waterfowl here, although not my favorite.

Oooh- the weather sounds terrible- and here we are complaining about the enormous amount of rain we've been having of late, complete with warning of flooding.
It was nasty to clear. Snow blower useless with such wet snow so it had to be shoveled. I was out a bit over two hours while M walked the dog. Now she's out doing her part (she'd be really angry if I did her job).

Good wife you have there Sir!
Coucal, more like a raptor than anything else, but not listed as a raptor. It has been known to take chameleons.

I've never seen a statistic, but it's probable that the majority of living birds are to some degree carnivorous if you include eating insects, worms & the like.

Tis true. I recall an incident a few years back, some friends were travelling and, as these dumb birds do from time to time, a flock of them decided to cross the busy highway, and my friends hit one- the flying dead I think its called. Anyway, these friends looked at each other, and without words being spoken, turned around and collected the dead Guinea fowl, and made a .... casserole with it. I'm often tempted myself as there are a lot of them around the parks in Johannesburg, and even seen some in peoples gardens.

Buffalo steaks are also very nice, a bit more difficult to come by, but if it can be had, well worth it! As is Buffalo biltong!

Another okapi in captivity. You need a copy of the "Road-Kill Cafe."

Ooooh... Not fair! Nobody makes/sells biltong up here

Well, we flew through Johannesburg on our way home, so there's still some chili beef biltong left. It will have to suffice

That kind only available in Kruger Park. There is also Elephant Biltong (which I tasted-somehow not quite palatable) and of course most of the ungulates of the Kruger, (most of which I have had-adventurous when it comes to biltong ) but I have not seen Giraffe biltong. Ostrich remains the best (imho) followed by Kudu. You can of course make your own, easy-peasy. Google will help! Reindeer/elk/moose biltong sounds good! Start a business! Get rich-visit Kruger!

Have not heard about Warthog biltong either-guess as part of the pork family, is probably not suitable. But have heard that Warthog steaks are good too!

Oryx. In Alaska some restaurants offered reindeer and moose steaks, but the places we selected never had either on the menu. I can vouch for rattlesnake fritters, and M was served civet in China.
PS: My visit to the Carnivore Restaurant in Kenya was mildly disappointing: beef, pork, chicken, lamb, but not even crocodile or ostrich. Emu, served at Maltida's Restaurants in the USA, is delicious. Bison (American "buffalo") is pretty good, although a bit dry compared to beef.

Ah, next time visit our fair shores and visit Carnivore Restaurant here (yep copied from the famous one in Kenya complete with Maasai spears) where Crocodile and other ungulates is on the Menu, alongside Zebra and Giraffe. You can keep the Rattlesnake fritters and the civet thank you! I do draw the line somewhere.

Must go back to birds for a moment, no mammals in the ready-to-post folder on this computer.

Went out in the kayak on 12/30, managed a few nice portraits of a local Baldy (K-30 & 18-135WR from about 30 yards)
